What Canada Legalising Cannabis Means for Research

Although we don’t have an opinion one way or the other regarding the legalisation of cannabis for recreational use, this is encouraging news for research as the BBC article states:

“There is still a lot to learn about the impact of cannabis on the human body.

Research into medical and recreational cannabis use has long been hamstrung in Canada due to marijuana’s status as a controlled substance, even though medical marijuana has been legal since 2001.

Funding was hard to come by, access to cannabis for research was restricted, and much of the research being done focused on the dangers of the drug.

Now, there are signs its new status will boost research and investment into studies looking at both the benefits and the harms of cannabis use, such as the impact of cannabis on issues like mental health, neurodevelopment, pregnancy, the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, driving, and pain management.”

With a change in UK law coming into force on 1st November there should be a similar boost over here. Unfortunately there is little mention of cancer, particularly regarding children – please help us change this by signing and sharing our petition.

BREAKING NEWS – Cannabis to be Rescheduled on 1st November…

img_0180The Government has finally set a date for when cannabis based medicinal products, including tetrahydrocannabinol, can be offered to patients on prescription – for the official publication click here.

However, you shouldn’t necessarily expect to see it being prescribed for cancer patients anytime soon…

Even with:

  1. The dramatic shrinkage of William’s tumour (and his continued good health)
  2. Our fight for more research funding – including proposing and helping fund a £100,000 research project
  3. William’s case being featured in an academic paper

AND even though there was nothing preventing doctors prescribing it to him since it is already legal (under the same pharmaceutical “specials” scheme that other cannabis based products are now going to be placed under), we still aren’t able to get Cannabidiol (CBD) on prescription because there isn’t enough evidence hence hospital authorities won’t justify the cost (currently just over £200 per month)!

Please consider signing our petition so that we can persuade government ministers to listen to our case for cannabis and cancer – we’re currently less than 400 signatures off 10,000!

Mainstream Cancer Charity Features Cannabidiol Research Paper

Awesome news – one of UK’s leading brain tumour charities, Brain Tumour Research, has written about the paper in which William’s case was featured – to view the post click here or on the image below.

Hopefully this is just the beginning of wider recognition by the cancer research community of the potential Anticancer properties of Cannabinoids (and perhaps even the Ketogenic Diet).

William Featured in Academic Research Paper

A year or so after William’s brain tumour shrank by two thirds further to us starting him on CBD and a Ketogenic Diet we agreed for his case to be included in an academic research paper and we’re excited to say that it has just been published (see link below).

OK, so we’re still struggling to get CBD funded for William on the NHS (please sign and share our petition if you haven’t already and hep us get to 10,000 signatures) and this paper won’t likely change that but we believe that things like this are a step in the right direction.

Please like and share this post to spread further awareness

We’re still fundraising for more research into other Cannabinoids, the Ketogenic Diet and Childhood Brain Tumours – if you’d like to donate directly towards this research, please visit our JustGiving Page which feeds into a Team JustGiving Page where we have already raised almost £5,000 in the last few months with the support of my employer Colas.

Report of Objective Clinical Responses of Cancer Patients to Pharmaceutical-grade Synthetic Cannabidiol

Although there are many research papers which demonstrate the effectiveness of various cannabinoids on various cancers in the laboratory, there aren’t many like this once which point to effects in humans.

I should point out that this paper has nothing to do with the research we proposed and helped fund last year (which is currently being carried out in Nottingham by the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre).

A massive thank you to all those who were involved – from GAP Vehicle Hire who lent us two fully fueled mini-buses to all those who took part, not forgetting all the individuals and organisations who sponsored us – please like and share to try and get us to £5,000 – donations can still be made at our JustGiving Page

It was by no means easy as some of the photos below will show although we worked hard as a team and (just) made it within the twelve hours – I couldn’t have asked for a better team of friends and colleagues to do this challenge with.

We started our walk at the Horton In Ribblesdale car park… with a fantastic weather forecast for the day ahead

Pen-Y-Ghent

Top of Pen-Y-Ghent – the first climb was a shock to the system to many of us (especially those of us carrying more than one rucksack ;-))

With the second mountain (Whernside) to the right and third one (Ingleborough) to the left, the enormity of what we have ahead of us starts to sink in… Spirits still high as we approach the midpoint between Pen-Y-Ghent and Whernside20936a81-0bfc-444f-836f-8ea91d2882f9A well-earned lunch break before we start the long-haul up to Whernside

Whernside

The Viaduct proves to be too-tempting a photo-opportunity…Half-way up Whernside and as well as it’s summit you can see those of of Pen-Y-Ghent,  and Ingleborough on the distant horizonsTop of Whernside and a well earned selfie stick photo…and I decide to hover for my snack……before a group shot at the summit Descent of Whernside (harder for some of us than the ascent!) with Ingleborough in the background

Ingleborough

Ingleborough outline looking more and more imposing…Hey Hey, a stretch of asphalt!!!A bit of entertainment in the form of para-gliders much appreciated as we started the long-slog up to IngleboroughNearing the top and looking back you can just about make out the outlines of Whernside and Pen-Y-GhentIngleIngleton ConqueredJob done!Route taken…img_4099…and elevation gained…
